The short answer
A modelled national midpoint for a medium dog runs about $1,300 a year across food, routine vet, grooming, and supplies; size and region then scale that base, so treat the result as a planning range, not a quote.
- ~$975

Midpoints synthesize APPA National Pet Owners Survey and AVMA spending ranges with the estimator size multipliers. They are illustrative planning figures, not live quotes from the portal DB.

Modelled estimate from typical national pet-ownership spending ranges, adjusted for size and region. Actual costs depend on location, provider, and pet health. Informational only, not financial advice.
How the pet cost estimator works
This tool helps current and prospective pet owners estimate the annual cost of pet ownership. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics regional cost-of-living data, household pet-care spending differs by more than 1,000 dollars a year between low-cost and high-cost U.S. metros, and PlainPetCare's underlying model spans more than 3,800 metro-level price estimates across 121 U.S. metro areas as of May 2026, see our methodology. The figures here are modelled national averages - consistent with published pet-ownership cost surveys (such as the APPA National Pet Owners Survey) - with two adjustments applied:
- Size multiplier (dogs): larger dogs eat more, need more product, and cost more to groom and board, so costs scale from ~0.75x (small) to ~1.7x (giant).
- Regional multiplier: a cost-of-living adjustment calibrates the national average to local pricing (Northeast and West Coast run above average; Southeast and Midwest below).
The service-level selector adjusts scope. Basic covers food and routine veterinary care. Standard adds professional grooming at typical frequency. Premium adds boarding (estimated at ~2 weeks/year) and pet insurance.
Understanding your results
The annual total is a midpoint, real spending commonly ranges 30% above or below it depending on pet health, breed-specific needs, and local market conditions. The category breakdown shows where savings are most achievable, such as at-home grooming between professional visits or comparing pet-insurance providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the pet cost estimator?
It produces a modelled midpoint estimate from typical national pet-ownership spending ranges, adjusted for pet size and region. Actual costs vary widely by provider, location, and pet health, treat the result as a planning starting point, not a quote.
Where do the numbers come from?
The base figures are modelled national averages consistent with published pet-ownership cost surveys (such as the APPA National Pet Owners Survey), with regional and size multipliers applied. They are estimates, not extracted from any single live feed.
Can I compare costs across different pet types?
Yes. Select different pet types, sizes, and service levels to compare annual costs side by side, with a per-category breakdown (food, grooming, routine vet, boarding, insurance).

Every figure on PlainPetCare is rendered directly from AKC breed data and industry pet-service pricing surveys, no number is typed in by an editor. This tool combines APPA and AVMA national spending ranges with BLS regional cost-of-living data; figures are modelled estimates, not live portal-DB records or editor-entered quotes.
