US pet-care cost statistics

Live SQL aggregates for 140 breeds and 121 metros. Modelled indexes run 0.76x to 1.50x (97% span). National full-groom midpoints run $42 to a $156 giant-class cap, calibrated to Bureau of Labor Statistics regional gaps and AKC size/coat tags. Estimates, not shop quotes.

What this page answers

Totals are computed live from this portal's modelled rebuild. A metro index is not a shop quote, and a shared giant-class midpoint is not a unique-breed ranking.

Key findings

Short, attributable one-liners from the same live queries as the charts. Quote with the Cite this page block.

  1. This rebuild holds 140 dog breeds, 121 U.S. metros, 8 service types, 1,120 national breed-by-service base rows, and 3,872 metro-by-service-by-size estimate rows.
  2. Modelled metro price indexes span 97% from 0.76x (Laredo, TX and Jackson, MS) to 1.50x (New York, NY). Indexes are calibrated to BLS regional cost-of-living gaps; they are not shop quotes.
  3. The population-weighted metro index is 1.11x, above the unweighted mean 1.01x, because larger metros sit higher on the ladder. 17 metros are tagged luxury and 26 budget.
  4. 5 giant-class breeds share the national full-groom midpoint ceiling at $156 (Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, Leonberger, Newfoundland, St. Bernard). That is a size-class cap in this model, not a unique-breed superlative.
  5. Chinese Crested is the only breed at the national full-groom midpoint floor ($42).
  6. The extract's most popular breed (French Bulldog, AKC rank 1) sits at a $53 national full-groom midpoint, not at the giant-class ceiling.
  7. 70 of 140 breeds are tagged weekly grooming cadence (50%). Cadence is an AKC-profile tag in this extract, not a booking recommendation.

How these totals are computed

Every figure is a SQL aggregate against PlainPetCare's local rebuild. Metro indexes come from metros.price_index (1.00x = national average). Population-weighted index is SUM(price_index * population) / SUM(population). National full-groom midpoints are (price_low + price_high) / 2 on breed_prices where service_slug = 'full-groom'. No headline total is hand-typed.

Several giant breeds share one midpoint ceiling; Laredo and Jackson share the lowest metro index. Those ties are reported as shared rungs so a reader does not treat a bin as a unique winner. Prices are modelled estimates calibrated to AKC size/coat profiles and BLS regional cost-of-living differences, not a live quote feed. Full source handling lives on the methodology page.
